The Planning Commission is responsible for creating and updating the Township’s Master Plan and Recreation Plan in accordance with the Michigan Planning Enabling Act. They also develop Zoning Ordinances in accordance with the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act. Once created, these documents are approved by the Township Board of Trustees. The commission educates citizens and businesses to develop property in accordance with those documents. They are also responsible for reviewing applications from residents and businesses for Special Land Uses as defined by the Zoning Ordinances as well as applications for rezoning. The commission is represented in the office by a planning and zoning department administrator who handles the day-to-day business of the department.
The planning commission is an appointed group of seven citizens who meet between four and twelve times a year, based on need, to review site plans, hold public hearings for special land use and rezoning requests, and write or amend ordinances.
*** New planning timeline for 2026 with the meeting date changes
Applications for site plan review and special land uses must be submitted by the 3rd Monday of the month, one month prior to the targeted planning commission meeting. 4 copies of the application and site plan must be submitted at this time. The township planner will have two weeks to review all information before it is sent back to the applicant with any outstanding items. If a second review is needed, additional fees will apply. The applicant will then have 1 week to revise it before the planner does a second review and it goes in front of the planning commission. 10 copies of the revised site plan must be submitted.
